What Is a Hafla? Your Guide to Vera's Weekend Brunch in Washington, DC

What Is a Hafla? Your Guide to Vera's Weekend Brunch in Washington, DC

You may have spotted the word hafla on our menu and wondered what, exactly, you're about to walk into. The short answer: the liveliest two and a half hours your weekend has ever seen. The longer answer is a story that crosses two continents, two culinary traditions, and over a century of shared history.

Here is everything you need to know before you book your seat at Vera's Brunch Hafla in Washington, DC.

What does "hafla" mean?

Hafla (حفلة) is an Arabic word that translates, roughly, to party or celebration. In Lebanese and broader Arab culture, a hafla is not a quiet gathering   it is a full sensory experience built around food, music, and dancing together. Think of it less as a dinner party and more as a joyful communal ritual where the table and the dance floor are the same.

The word carries warmth. A hafla is where families mark milestones, where friendships deepen, and where strangers become acquaintances over a shared plate of mezze and the beat of a darbuka drum. At its core, a hafla is about presence, showing up fully, eating well, moving freely, and celebrating being alive.

How did a Lebanese word end up paired with a Mexican brunch?

At Vera, everything begins with the remarkable cultural history between Lebanon and Mexico.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, waves of Lebanese immigrants arrived on Mexican shores. They brought with them spices, techniques, and traditions, and over generations, these blended with Mexican ingredients and cooking methods in ways that neither culture could have predicted. The result is a culinary lineage that most people don't know exists: dishes like tacos al pastor (descended directly from the Lebanese shawarma), lamb preparations marinated in achiote, and flatbreads kissed with both Mexican chili and Lebanese sumac.

At Vera, the Brunch Hafla is the place where that history gets celebrated out loud with food, music, and the kind of energy that the word hafla was built for. You can explore the full story of this fusion on our About page.

What actually happens at Vera's Brunch Hafla?

Think of it as a live show you eat inside.

Every Saturday and Sunday, Vera hosts two seatings:

  1. 12:00 PM seating
  2. 12:30 PM seating

Each seating runs for approximately 2½ hours and is a 21+ experience.

From the moment you sit down, the room is alive. DJs, percussionists, Latin performers, and belly dancers move through the space not on a distant stage, but in the room with you. The energy builds across the afternoon. Dancing is not just permitted; it is practically mandatory.

There is a $30 per person entertainment fee applied to each reservation. This fee directly supports the performers who make every Hafla possible, and it is charged upon your arrival.

Food is ordered from our à la carte brunch menu, a curated selection of Lebanese-Mexican dishes designed for sharing. Think bold flavors, vibrant ingredients, and plates that look as good as they taste.

What's on the brunch menu?

Our full brunch menu is designed around the same philosophy as the Hafla itself: bold, communal, and rooted in two great culinary traditions.

Expect dishes that draw on Lebanese herbs and spices alongside Mexican techniques and ingredients. The menu is built for the table, meaning plates arrive to be passed, shared, and argued over in the best possible way. Check the Vera menu page for current offerings across brunch, dinner, cocktails, and dessert.

How is this different from other DC brunches?

Washington DC has no shortage of brunch options. What makes the Brunch Hafla genuinely different:

It is a performance and a meal at the same time. Most brunch spots offer background music. Vera offers belly dancers weaving between tables, percussionists building the energy of the room, and DJs curating a soundtrack that spans Afro house, Arabic rhythms, and Latin music, the same world-class programming that powers our late-night Sala Sonidos events.

The concept has deep cultural roots. This isn't a themed brunch for aesthetics. The fusion of Lebanese and Mexican culture at Vera's table has a documented, century-long history. Every dish and every playlist decision traces back to that story.

The room is designed for it. Vera's Ivy City space was built to host both intimate dining and live celebration in the same breath. The layout, the acoustics, the energy   it all serves the Hafla experience.

Want more music at Vera after brunch?

If the Hafla energy leaves you wanting more, Vera doesn't stop at brunch. Our Sala Sonidos events run every Friday and Saturday from 11:30 PM onward, transforming the dining room into an intimate dance party curated by world-touring DJs and resident talent. The music spans Afro house, tech house, Arabic, and Latin frequencies.

Sala Sonidos and the Brunch Hafla exist on the same continuum; both are rooted in the idea that food, music, and movement belong together.
